Irvine / Reader questions

# Ask which medicine is actually on offer.

Peptide care is a broad label. The useful answer names the substance, the product and the reason it is being considered.

<a id="meaning"></a>

## The word does not name a treatment.

Think of a protein as a long string of tiny pieces; a peptide is a shorter string of those same pieces.

Insulin is an example; the term also covers very different substances.

Ask for the exact name rather than a broad package called peptide care.

- Write down the substance’s name.

- Get its product name, then ask how it comes: tablet, injection or another form.

- Ask which health goal it is meant to address.

## Separate the product types.

### A medicine with approval

The US medicine regulator is FDA, short for Food and Drug Administration.

The medicine called semaglutide appears in FDA-approved products such as Ozempic and Wegovy.

Ozempic helps control high blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, a condition that leaves too much sugar in the blood.

Wegovy is used to reduce weight and help maintain that loss, together with changes in food and exercise.

Tirzepatide is a different medicine, sold as Mounjaro and Zepbound; these brands also have FDA approval.

Mounjaro helps control blood sugar in type 2 diabetes; Zepbound helps with long-term weight management.

Ask whether the named product and its intended use match the care being discussed.

These approval records were checked September 26, 2026.

### A medicine prepared by compounding

A pharmacist or doctor compounds a medicine by making or mixing it, instead of using a finished factory product.

The purpose can be to meet a person’s need that available approved medicines cannot address.

A pharmacy preparing a medicine for a particular patient needs that person’s valid prescription, as well as meeting other legal conditions.

The law also limits the raw ingredients a pharmacy may use when making medicine this way.

Ask the pharmacist which rules cover this preparation, why its ingredients are allowed and how it meets the rules. If the answer is unclear, take the details to California’s pharmacy board before paying.

FDA has not approved the medicine that results from compounding.

Before sale, FDA has not reviewed this preparation’s quality or checked its safety and treatment effect.

Compounding status checked September 26, 2026.

### A product carrying a research label

BPC-157 is a peptide name; the check on September 26, 2026 found no FDA-approved medicine with that name.

If that name appears in your offer, ask the clinician what health problem they propose to treat and what evidence supports that use.

In its 2026 letters, the FDA treated research-labelled products promoted for human treatment as unapproved drugs despite their labels.

Do not accept a bottle labelled for research as your treatment. Take the offer to the clinician and ask about a medicine intended for patient care.

A prescription does not turn a research-labelled product into an FDA-approved medicine.

Research-product status checked September 26, 2026.

## If compounding comes up, ask why.

Make the patient need the centre of the discussion.

- What need does this preparation meet for me?

- Why would a finished approved product not meet that need?

- Which pharmacy will prepare it?

- How will we judge whether to continue?
