Check a licence

Irvine / Reader questions

Look up the clinician, then the pharmacy.

A care offer has names behind it. Use those names to check the state records, then ask about anything you cannot match.

Get the names before opening the search.

The service’s brand name is not enough for this task. Work from the person’s full name and the pharmacy’s own name.

  • Copy the name as the service gives it.
  • Keep the licence number beside it.
  • Save the record and note any question you still have.

Match names to records.Keep the person’s record separate from the pharmacy’s record.

Follow the names into the state records.

  1. Ask for the record names.

Get the full name of the person who would write your prescription, their profession and their licence number. Record the full name of any pharmacy handling preparation or delivery.

  2. Choose the person’s profession in the search.

MD and DO identify two kinds of doctor; each has a different California licensing board.

Use the state’s MD search for an MD and its DO search for a DO.

For a nurse practitioner, match the following nursing-board entries to the same person:

    • RN is the person’s nursing licence.
    • NP confirms their status as a nurse practitioner.
    • NPF is the separate certificate a nurse practitioner needs to prescribe medicine.

If an entry is missing or unclear, ask the nursing board to check the person’s permission to prescribe before proceeding.

For a physician assistant, use the Physician Assistant Board’s record.

  3. Read beyond the current status.

The state search can show whether a licence is current, expired, suspended or revoked.

Match the name and number, then open any linked board documents. Keep questions about a record for the board or clinician.

A clear record does not prove that a doctor has never settled a claim about harm from care.

  4. Check the pharmacy on its own record.

Sterile compounding means preparing medicine intended to be free of germs.

The pharmacy board provides separate searches for pharmacy and sterile-compounding licences.

If a service describes that work, ask which licence entry covers it.

Nonresident here means based outside California.

An out-of-state pharmacy shipping prescription medicine into California needs a California nonresident pharmacy licence.

Ask the board which search type to use if you cannot find the record.
